Growing up in the small Texas town of Winnie, Skipper Bettis roamed the swamps and rice fields hunting small game, ducks and geese. At nineteen he was taken on his first whitetail hunt in the Texas Hill Country. After harvesting his first deer, Skipper caught the big game hunting fever.
In 1975, Skipper’s dreams of the wild North began to materialize as he traveled to the Northwest Territories to become a guide/outfitter. He settled in northern British Columbia where he spent the next ten years developing the 3.5 million acres of Turnagain River Outfitters into a successful hunting concession. Seeing the demand for trophy Northern White-tailed Deer, he relocated to the Michigan area and began developing the Sanctuary in 1986. Having hunted all over North America, parts of Africa, guiding for brown bear with Alaskan Master Guide Keith Johnson in the spring along with managing trophy whitetails during the Michigan autumn kept Skipper in tune with the hunting industry. In the 1990’s Skipper began to take northern whitetails to a new level with advanced nutrition, genetics, age and innovative management techniques. In 1998, Legends Ranch and the next step in white-tailed deer management began. Skipper combined his 30 years of experience in game management, along with Dr. James Kroll Dr Deer and Legends Deer Feeds developing the latest nutrition technology available for hunters and deer managers alike.
Working along side his son Colby, Skipper now helps to prepare the next step in the ultimate hunting operation. 2015 brought the inception of Two Hats Ranch, combining approximately 55 years of knowledge and experience in every aspect of the hunting world. Skipper continues to pass a lifetime of knowledge to the second generation of this family business and is blessed to prepare the up and coming third generation of Bettis’ to carry on our tradition of hunting.
Married to Glenna for 41 years, Skipper considers that is quite an accomplishment and also proudly boasts of his special joys; Bodie, Jackson, Penelope and Clara as being their proud “Partner”(grandfather) and probably should mention the parents of these jewels; daughter Cassie and son-in-love Jim, son Colby and daughter-in-love Lisa.
Thru his love of hunting Skipper realized there were those who could only dream of the chance to have a barrier free hunt because of the life obstacles that prevent them from enjoying God’s great outdoors and the sport of hunting. Quest Ministries, a nonprofit organization was formed to make the opportunity possible thru two hunts; Special Youth Challenge Hunt and Billy Ray Parnell Memorial Purple Heart Hunt. Each year 6 hunters from all over the United States are accepted thru an application process for each hunt of a lifetime at no cost to the hunter. They are coming for the trophy of a lifetime. Skipper wants each of them to know the ultimate trophy of eternity, Jesus Christ. That is the mission of Quest Ministries.
